WINDHOEK: The President of Liberia, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first female president, arrived in the capital of Namibia yesterday on a three-day state visit. This is her first visit to the country as the President of Liberia.
President Johnson Sirleaf was welcomed by the President of Namibia, President Hifikepunye Pohamba, members of Cabinet and diplomats at Hosea Kutako International Airport on Sunday. the occasion was marked with a military parade and gun salute followed by an inspection of the guard of honor by the Liberian President.
Today, both Presidents will hold official talks with the aim to conclude several co-operation agreements between Namibia and Liberia.
Sirleaf Johnson is scheduled to visit a diamond cutting and polishing plant in Windhoek and to be the guest of honor at a gala dinner to be hosted by the Ministry of Gender Equality and and Child Welfare tonight.
The President is also expected to visit the harbor town of Walvis Bay and visit a the Etale Fishing Company on Tuesday. She will conclude her visit with an address to the National Assembly before departing on Tuesday evening.
According to the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Liberia assisted the ruling party, SWAPO, during the liberation struggle. Namibia was also part of a UN contingent who assisted Liberia during its recent elections which saw Johnson Sirleaf being elected as Africa’s first female head of State.
